WalkWorks

Active Transportation in Berwick

Berwick Borough is working to improve how people walk, bike, and roll (including using wheelchairs, strollers, and mobility devices) throughout our community. Safer sidewalks, better crossings, ADA accessibility upgrades, and stronger connections to downtown, schools, parks, and the riverfront help support quality of life, local business activity, and community health.

Program Acknowledgement

This effort is supported through the Pennsylvania WalkWorks Active Transportation Planning (ATP) program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH) and the Pennsylvania Downtown Center (PDC), in partnership with other organizations.

Local Project Partner: Salem Township

Berwick Borough is grateful to Salem Township for its partnership and support, which helped make participation in the WalkWorks Active Transportation Planning (ATP) program possible.

What "Active Transportation" Means

Active transportation includes everyday trips made by:

  • Walking
  • Bicycling
  • Rolling (wheelchairs, mobility devices, strollers)Using other small mobility options where permitted

Our goal is to make these trips safer, easier, and more comfortable for residents of all ages and abilities.

Why This Matters in Berwick

Improving active transportation can help:

  • Increase safety at intersections and along roadways
  • Address missing or damaged sidewalks and curb ramps
  • Improve ADA accessibility and connectivity
  • Support Safe Routes to School and youth mobility
  • Strengthen access to downtown, parks, and community destinations
  • Reduce barriers for seniors and residents with disabilities
  • Position Berwick for future funding by identifying priority projects and cost estimates

What We're Working On

This planning work focuses on practical, implementable improvements such as:

  • Sidewalk network enhancements (repair, infill, and connectivity)
  • Safer crossings (crosswalk visibility, pedestrian signals, curb ramp upgrades)
  • ADA accessibility upgrades (barrier removal and compliance improvements)
  • Routes to key destinations (schools, parks, downtown, public facilities)
  • Wayfinding and connectivity (helping people navigate safely and confidently)
  • Project prioritization (short-, mid-, and long-term projects with estimated costs)

How the Plan Will Be Developed

The Borough will be working with a consultant through the WalkWorks program to help guide the planning process, assess current conditions, and develop recommendations for safer and more connected walking, biking, and rolling routes in Berwick.

The Borough will work through a structured planning process, which may include:

  • Reviewing existing plans and community input already gathered
  • Field observations and walk/bike audits
  • Identifying safety concerns and access barriers
  • Mapping key destinations and common routes
  • Developing a recommended project list and implementation strategy
  • Sharing draft recommendations for public review
